The Mougous Lab

Defining the mechanisms and significance of interbacterial interactions in medical and environmental settings

Our Research

Antibacterial

Toxins

These are fascinating proteins that disable target cells through diverse mechanisms, providing insight into vulnerabilities of bacteria.

Epibiotic

Bacteria

These remarkable, understudied, miniscule bacteria grow on the surface of host bacteria.

Gut Bacteria Interactions

Antagonism and defense are critical for the survival of bacteria in the densely colonized mammalian GI tract.

Secreted Virulence Factors

Bacteria employ toxins delivered by specialized secretions systems to overcome host defense strategies.

News

April 22, 2026 – Riley Eastmond joins the lab as new graduate student

We are excited to have Riley join the lab as a student from the Yale Department of Microbial Pathogenesis. Riley has previously worked on a variety of signaling systems in prostate cancer and the utilization of Cre-lox in mice at BYU and Sloan-Kettering respectively. Welcome, Riley!

February 12, 2026 – Qinqin Zhao Accepts Faculty Position at Westlake University

Dr. Qinqin Zhao will be departing the lab to begin her independent career as an Assistant Professor at Westlake University. She will be joining the Center for Infectious Disease Research and the School of Medicine to continue her outstanding research on the molecular mechanisms of microbial competition. We are immensely proud of everything she has accomplished during her time with us at both UW and Yale, and we wish her the absolute best in running her own lab!

January 5, 2026 – Caitlin Moss and Jake Colautti join the lab

We are excited to welcome two new members to our research team! Caitlin Moss joins us as our new Lab Manager. Jake Colautti joins the group as a visiting graduate student from McMaster University. We are thrilled to have them both on board.

August 1, 2025 – Mougous Lab moves to Yale

The Mougous Lab has moved to Yale School of Medicine's Department of Microbial Pathogenesis and the Microbial Sciences Institute at West Campus. We look forward to this tremendous opportunity and the collaborative possibilities with our new colleagues.

August 1, 2025 – Minwoo Bae joins as new Postdoctoral Scholar

Min comes to us from the Balskus Lab at Harvard University, where he worked on various questions pertaining to the gut microbiome. We are excited to bring on Min as the newest addition of our research team!
